A DAY IN THE LIFE OF.... RACHEL MAGAHY, CREATOR OF 'IN SPACES BETWEEN' Posted 8th February 2012 A DAY IN THE LIFE OF.... RACHEL MAGAHY, CREATOR OF 'IN SPACES BETWEEN'

By now you would all know that ‘In Spaces Between’ is one of my favourite blogs, one that I check in with at least 2-3 times per week (which btw is massive for me!). Rachel has beautiful way with words; her posts are not only a delight to read but are both inspiring and thought provoking. I was so thrilled when Rachel agreed to guest post on our Style Blog with ‘A Day in the Life of…’ feature. So make that cuppa and treat yourself to a few minutes with the gorgeous Rachel Magahy. Bx

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF RACHEL MAGAHY, CREATOR OF IN SPACES BETWEEN

My day starts at 5:15am and the first thing I do is roll over and give my fiancé Ramai a kiss which he pretends to dislike (because it wakes him up), but I know he secretly loves. Maybe.

I stayed up watching a doco last night and I’m feeling a bit sleepy so I walk with one eye open to the bathroom to splash cold water over my face in an attempt to speed up the waking up process. Hellooooo world, I’m alive!

Embarrassingly, one of the first things I do once I’m up and about is turn on my computer to check my emails and Twitter feed (can I justify this by saying a lot of my readers are overseas? No?) as I sip a glass of water and ponder whether all my exercise clothes are in the dirty clothes basket.

Over the next 10 or so minutes, I go back into our bedroom and perform my daily “UP TIME NOW!” ritual (Ramai is also a huge fan of this) (not) and I tell him “It’s an amazing day outside, are you going surfing?  Get up, you’ll feel so much better!”

As you can tell, I’m awesome to be around before 5:30am.

After rummaging around for my favourite lululemon tights and a hot pink Lorna Jane singlet that says ‘I Love to Run’ (positive affirmations even make their way onto my clothes) I pack away last night’s dishes from the drying rack in the kitchen, water our herbs, potter around a bit more and head out the door by 5:40am to make my 5:45am group training class by the beach at North Burleigh headland.

I’ve come to realise my speciality (downfall) is squeezing as many things as possible into the shortest amount of time, so of course, by the time I’m in the car and realise I have 1.5 minutes to be at my destination, I’m cursing myself for rushing. Again.

I exercise for an hour – on group training days that can involve anything from hill sprints to plyometrics or army crawls in the soft sand, or on other days, it can entail a run or gym session – and then head home just before 7am, where I make our bed and start my first phase of work for the day. I have a ‘thing’ with bed-making, if I don’t do it at before I leave for work I feel scattered for the rest of the day. I’ve been making my bed consistently since I was about 4 years old!

For once, the surfing/ Fox Sport isn’t on in the background so I press play on Oprah and Cheryl Richardson’s Lifeclass video to get me inspired as I sit on the computer finishing off and posting an article for In Spaces Between, answering emails and responding to blog/ Facebook/ Twitter comments.

While I’m working away, Ramai gets busy making our lunches for work in the kitchen (did I tell you I’m marrying this man in 4 months? Definitely a keeper!) and I take a quick break to whip up a green smoothie with spinach, Sun Warrior Raw Vegan Protein Powder, chia seeds, banana, ice and water.

Glancing up at the clock, I see it’s 7:45am and realising how hideously “un-ready” I am, I race to the shower then run around my room looking for something to wear (“Hi neighbours!”), apply some makeup, pull my hair back into a sleek up-do and head out the door for work.

Driving to work is phone time and I chat to my Mum on my 20-minute commute, while taking in glorious beach views to my right. Stunning.  I say a silent thank you. So blessed.

I work in Digital PR by day, so once I arrive in the office, my day can entail anything from writing website content to planning film shoots, interacting with fans on our social media channels or planning campaigns. Today I’m chatting to some lovely travel bloggers to organise a ‘familiarisation’ trip for them which is good fun.

Lunch rolls around pretty quickly and I eat my ‘made with love’ salad at my desk while checking my blog, catching up on my Google Reader and talking to my bloggy friends online. My salads are packed with as many good things as possible – silverbeet, roast pumpkin, tomatoes, carrots, nuts (and feta today) and I add in some tuna I found in the fridge at work. A can I’m hopefully the owner of.

I’m all about maximising my lunch breaks these days, and take the opportunity to head out and get a few wedding-y things done. I hit one of my favourite second-hand stores and find a few treasures to add to my ever-growing collection of crystal decanters. Score! On other days, I use my breaks to go to the physio, hit the shops or visit my beautician for a brow wax and tint.

The afternoon is filled with work, work, work, and I walk through the door at home by 5:45pm, where I kick off my heels and jump straight on the computer for the night (oh dear, this is starting to sound a bit unbalanced, isn’t it?!)

I procrastinate for a while then take a break for dinner. I make baked Snapper and salad tonight, but when I’m really “in the zone,” Ramai will take the reins, for which I’m very grateful.

What’s the time? 6:30pm. Right, time to get into it! I’ve been trying to implement an 8:30pm computer curfew (not always successful, but I’m definitely getting better) so once I’m back online, I close down Twitter and hammer out an article to go live tomorrow on In Spaces Between. It seems to be getting easier to write faster the more I flex my writing muscle and I find I don’t self-edit as I go as much as I used to, which comes in very handy when I want to whip up some wicked words quickly.  I like to let my posts ‘percolate’ overnight as well so I try and get as much done as possible so that in the morning I only have to do edits and add in some images.

Once I’m off the computer, it’s shower time and I jump into bed with one of my books (I’m a big book nerd and currently have 9 unread books on my bedside table). I’d like to say I don’t touch my phone for the rest of the night, but I can’t resist putting my book down for a bit and scrolling through my Instagram feed – I love it!

Sometimes we put on a meditation track, but sleepiness is setting in quickly so I chat to Ramai for a bit and then it’s lights off by 9:45pm. I know I’m going to fall asleep pretty much as soon as I close my eyes.

And there you have it, a day in the life of Rach!

If you haven’t done so already, we suggest you check out In Spaces Between (here) for yourself and bookmark it while you’re there - you can thank us later ;)
